Currency
The local currency in Honduras is called the Lempira (HNL).
Some hotels and shops accept U.S. dollars, but it’s best to have local cash for mototaxis, tips, and small purchases.
Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, nicer restaurants, and some shops, but not everywhere.
Reminder: Let your bank know you’re traveling if you plan to use your credit or debit card in Honduras to avoid any blocks or fees.

One U.S. dollar is equal to about 24 Lempiras, give or take, depending on the exchange rate.
Atm's and Banks
You can find ATMs and banking services at these main banks in town
BAC Credomatic
Banco Atlántida
Banco de Occidente
These banks typically accept Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards, and ATMs dispense cash in Lempiras only. Let your bank know you’re traveling to avoid any declined transactions.
Currency Exchange
We recommend you exchange dollars at local banks in Copán (passport required).
Many travelers prefer to simply use their debit or credit card at ATMs or for purchases, but keep in mind your bank may charge a foreign transaction or withdrawal fee. It's a good idea to check with your bank ahead of time so you’re not caught off guard

Language
Spanish is the official language of Honduras, but don’t worry, Copán is very tourist friendly. Many people who work in hotels, restaurants, and shops speak basic English, and our family will be around to help translate if you ever need support.
